DPTM (SS 714:2025) & PDPA Compliance
Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) mandates how organisations collect, use, and disclose personal data, with penalties of up to 10% of annual turnover or S$1 million for breaches. The Data Protection Trustmark (DPTM) — administered by the PDPC under Singapore Standard SS 714:2025 — is a voluntary certification that provides independent validation of accountable data protection practices, going beyond baseline PDPA compliance to signal commercial and reputational credibility.

Common Questions About DPTM (SS 714:2025) & PDPA Compliance in Singapore
What is the Data Protection Trustmark (DPTM)?
The Data Protection Trustmark (DPTM) is a voluntary certification by IMDA/PDPC that demonstrates accountable data protection governance aligned with Singapore Standard SS 714:2025. It goes beyond minimum PDPA compliance, certifying that your organisation has a comprehensive Data Protection Management Programme (DPMP). Certification is recognised by customers, regulators, and partners.
What is the difference between PDPA compliance and DPTM certification?
PDPA is the legal baseline — all Singapore organisations must comply. DPTM is a voluntary certification that demonstrates a comprehensive Data Protection Management Programme aligned with SS 714:2025. DPTM signals trusted data stewardship to customers, regulators, and partners, going significantly beyond minimum legal requirements.
How long does DPTM certification take?
DPTM certification typically takes 4–6 months. The process includes PDPA gap assessment, DPO appointment, documentation development, controls implementation, DPIAs, and the PDPC assessment body review. ICPL provides full implementation support and assessment coordination.
Is DPTM certification recognised outside Singapore?
DPTM is a Singapore-specific certification by IMDA/PDPC. While not internationally recognised as a standard, it is respected by multinational companies operating in Singapore and signals strong data governance practices. For international recognition, ICPL also offers ISO 27701 (Privacy Information Management) certification.
Who needs DPTM certification in Singapore?
DPTM is voluntary — no organisation is legally required to hold it. It is most valuable for organisations handling significant volumes of personal data: healthcare, finance, education, retail with loyalty programmes, and digital platforms. It is also sought by companies whose Singapore customers, partners or procurement teams ask for evidence of accountable data practices beyond baseline PDPA compliance. All organisation sizes are eligible under SS 714:2025.
What documents must we prepare for DPTM certification?
The assessment body reviews your personal data inventory and data flow mapping, data protection policies and privacy notices, your consent framework, DPO appointment records and governance documentation, Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for high-risk processing, data breach response and notification procedures, vendor data processing agreements, staff training records, and retention and disposal procedures. ICPL develops and structures the full documentation suite with your team.
What determines the cost of DPTM certification?
Cost depends on your current PDPA maturity (an organisation with established data protection practices needs far less work), the complexity of your data flows and systems, the number of third-party processing relationships, and the remediation the readiness assessment identifies. Consultancy fees are quoted after a free gap assessment. Assessment body certification fees are separate and are paid directly to the assessment body. The EDGE grant may offset up to 50% of qualifying consultancy costs for eligible SMEs, subject to Enterprise Singapore’s assessment.
Can existing ISO 27001 controls support DPTM certification?
Yes. Access control, incident and breach management, vendor management, risk assessment and governance controls from a certified ISMS map directly onto DPTM’s operational requirements. The additional work is personal-data-specific: consent and notification practices, DPIAs, retention and disposal procedures, and the Data Protection Management Programme (DPMP) structure that SS 714:2025 expects.
What happens after we achieve DPTM certification?
DPTM certification is valid for 3 years, after which re-certification is required. In between, you maintain the DPMP, keep documentation current, and continue meeting all PDPA obligations — including the 3-calendar-day PDPC notification requirement for notifiable data breaches. ICPL provides ongoing data protection programme support and re-certification preparation.
